Through our Brooklyn Accelerator initiative, we are pleased to offer training and assistance to Brooklyn nonprofits. This is an exciting opportunity for nonprofit leaders and managers to participate in a free full-day training on Racial Justice facilitated by national experts, with concrete takeaways to apply within their own organizations.
In order to maximize participants' ability to implement what they have learned within their organizations, we recommend that nonprofits send two staff members to this training (each must register separately). For small organizations with limited capacity for staff to attend, please consider sending an active board member or other volunteer.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Use language and analysis of institutional and structural racism that are commonly used in the field
- Clarify and build buy-in for the importance of addressing racism in your organization
- Identify the elements needed to make an effective case for addressing racism and pursuing racial justice in your organization
- Understand how to use racial equity primes, tools and protocols to address racism and pursue racial justice
- Consult racial equity resources to identify tools and protocols to use in your organization
- Connect with a peer network of nonprofit leaders who are addressing racial justice
- Develop action steps for operationalizing racial equity in your organization
About Our Facilitators:
Cynthia Silva Parker
Cynthia is an advocate for equity and justice and builds the capacity of individuals, organizations and networks to work collaboratively for social justice. She has served as a Senior Associate at the IISC since 1998. She delivers training, consulting, coaching, and facilitation services to nonprofit and public organizations focused on racial equity, environmental sustainability, community development and other aspects of social justice work.
Cynthia’s prior leadership experience includes Director of Boston Freedom Summer, the Ten Point Coalition’s faith-based youth leadership and community development project, and Project Administrator for the Algebra Project, Inc., a national nonprofit education group focused on access to algebra as a civil right. Cynthia holds a BA from Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and a Master of Public Policy/MCRP from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
Nayantara is an activist, network builder, and social and racial justice educator and trainer. She is the Manager of Cultural Strategies and Senior Trainer at Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation.
At Race Forward, she produces curricula, anchors a national bench of trainers and political educators, facilitates racial equity workshops to support nonprofits, and develops cultural and narrative strategies for racial justice movement-building. She is the program designer and manager of the Racial Equity in the Arts Innovation Lab in New York City, which is equipping 60 arts and cultural organizations with racial equity practices and prototypes.
Nayantara is also the Co-Principal of Art/Work Practice, LLC, a bicoastal consulting firm that works at the intersections of arts, culture, narrative and organizational change in order to build equity across all people's work. Nayantara is a racial justice trainer and consultant with Border Crossers and MPG Consulting in New York City.
